JHENIDAH, Oct 31: The historical house of world famous mathematician K.P. Basu at Harishankarpur village under Jhenidah Sadar Upazila is on the verge of breaking down for lack of care and maintenance.
Kalipada Basu, popularly known as K.P. Basu, was born in 1865 at Harishankarpur village where he received primary education from a talented rural teacher Nosim Uddin Mandol who made a significant contribution to the development of Basu's fundamental knowledge.
Mr. Basu, a promising fellow, after completing his M.A. degree from Kolkata University joined the Department of Mathematics in Dhaka College in 1882 where he continued teaching for the rest of his life.
Mr. Basu who is known globally for his contribution to the field of Algebra was not confined to teaching only. He made invaluable contributions to the development of Algebra in the late 1800s. He studied modern European algebra and made it easier and more lucid in terms of scientific expression. Mr. Basu's work was approved and recommended by Hunter Commission in the late 1980s. The man invented new mathematical proofs too and elevated the standard of the local algebra available at the time.
He suffered from a strange disease and breathed his last in 1914 at the age of only 49 years. His deadbody was first brought to Harishakarpur village where thousands of people including his disciples paid respect to him and later his body was taken to Kolkata for funeral.
Locals demanded that the building, after bringing under archeological department should be made a tourist spot.
The local administration named a road 'K.P. Basu Sharok' in Jhenidah town after the world famous mathematician's name decades ago and now his house needs to be preserved on urgent basis, said Ganesh Kumar, lecturer in History of Hatgopalpur Degree College.
While contacted, Jhenidah Deputy Commissioner Md. Shafiqul Islam told the Financial Express that he would soon talk to the Archeological Department about preservation of the house.
