House rent on rise in capital

The financial pain of the city tenants is mounting as house owners have started hiking rent, cashing in on the budgetary bounty for government employees.

Tenants and officials said house rent saw an abrupt rise of 10 to 25 per cent in and around the city just after the announcement of dearness allowance (DA) for public servants in the new budget much to the dismay of low and middle-income groups.

They noted that while the rent for flats in the city's posh residential areas saw a modest rise of 10 per cent, the increase is higher or 20 per cent in case of small and medium-sized apartments in other parts.

"The latest bout of rent hike will devastate us further," Moniruzzaman Khan, a tenant in the city's Malibagh area, said Saturday.
