Housewife commits suicide in Kurigram

A housewife allegedly committed suicide by taking poison at Nilur Kahmar village in Nageshwari upazila Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Lucky, 25, wife of Azim Uddin of the village. Police quoting local people said following a quarrel with her husband Lucky took poison after Iftar. She was rushed to the upazila health complex where the attending doctor declared her dead at about 8:30 pm. A UD case was filed. - UNB
Rickshaw-puller gets one-year jail in Sirajganj
A mobile court here on Monday convicted a rickshaw-puller and sentenced him to one year imprisonment for sexually harassing a female school student. The convict was identified as Lovelu, 45, son of Surut Zaman of Alamdanga village in Ullapara upazila. Police said Lovelu sexually harassed the girl, a class X student of town's Saleha Ishaq Government Girls' High School while she was returning home from school at noon. Hearing her hue and cry locals caught Lovelu and handed over him to police. Later, the mobile court led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Shawkat Hossain handed down the verdict. - UNB
3 drug peddlers awarded life term in Gazipur
A court here on Tuesday convicted three drug peddlers and sentenced them to life term imprisonment in a drug case.The convicts were identified as Sohel Rana and his wife Lucky of Gourpur village in Mehendiganj upazila and Mejbah Uddin, son of Latif Bepari of Maskata village in Hijla upazila of Barisal district. Acting on secret information, a team of RAB-1 arrested them from in front of a hotel in Duttapara area of Tongi thana on April 4, 2008 along with some small packets of heroin. Later, a case was filed against them under Narcotics Control Act. After examining the records and witnesses Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 M Jakir Hossain pronounced the verdict. - UNB
Robber arrested in B'baria
Police arrested a member of an inter-district robber gang from a den in the district town Monday midnight. The arrestee was identified as Shiron Miah, son of Ruba Miah of Devgram area of Sadar pourashava. Police said on secret information they raided the den and arrested him while taking drug. His accomplices, however, managed to flee the scene. Police said Shiron was wanted in a number of robbery, arms and other criminal cases. A case was filed against him under Narcotics Control Act. UNB
Youth dies of heatstroke in Bogra
A young man died of heatstroke in Sutrapur area of the district town on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Jewel Sheikh, 22, son of Golam Mostafa Sheikh of the area.
Local people said Jewel had fallen in the sweltering heat on the way while going to a nearby pond to take a bath at about noon. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where the attending doctor declared him dead. - UNB
Farmer killed by his rival in Mymenshing
Farmer Ranju Mia, 30 was killed by his rival at Panchrukhi Bazar in Nandail upazila Tuesday. Police said he had pervious enmity with his rival Nur Mohammad. Ranju came to the bazaar at about 9pm. Nur Mohammad stabbed Ranju with a sharp knife, leaving him spot dead. On information police went to the spot and brought the body to Nandail thana. Nur Mohammad fled away. - UNB
Robbers loot valuables in Kulaura
Robbers looted valuables from an expatriate's house in BichraKandi area of Kulaura municipality Monday early hours.Police said breaking open the door, a gang of robbers entered into the house of expatriate Rahmat Ali late at night in the absence of family members and looted cash and other valuables worth Tk 0.3 m.
