How important are TV serials?

That television serials are intoxicating for some and the greatest enemy to others is quite evident. Of course, the number of those remaining spellbound by the small screen far surpasses that of its haters. So, the serial producers have no reason to be unduly disturbed and afraid of losing viewers. There is a fair chance of the haters dwindling in sizes simply because of the Facebook or social site culture. Reading books is becoming limited to an ever decreasing numbers of book lovers. So whatever made-up stories or trash the mediocre minds bring on the screen will get viewers -a large number of them unthinking, moronic avid ones.
Some of the most popular serials are shown on the ZEE Bangla from across the border. One has to be considerably vacuous if the naivety on display through the turns and twists has to be digested. So fictitious and outlandish are the series of incidents and events that even a person of average intellect cannot help questioning the authenticity of those. There is no harm in portraying something ideal even if there are doses of elements of disbeliefs. But the violence and intrigues as depicted in the serials within a family benumbs one's senses. It is a pity that people not only tolerate such unreal happenings but also wait anxiously for the next course of actions.
Most turns of events are predictable unless the unconvincing patterns suddenly go miles away from any reasonable limit. Real life drama where psycho-analytical elements compel one to think deep and wonder about human relations is a rare commodity on the small screen. Any product of a weirdly fertile brain can never really delve deep into human minds. Guiles, intrigues or too stereotyped simplistic honesty on someone's part make the spices for such serials. These cannot pose challenge to people's intellect or emotion or passion. The broad lines are crude too and there is no limit to crudity. Without being so gross, dramas can be entertaining. Those confronting life squarely are not everyone's cup of tea. Depressing they may be, but that is exactly how serious people must find themselves engrossed in genuine creation.
The argument that it is entertainment time and why should people stress themselves to their limit to find the meaning of a drama or a serial is right up to a point. But then one should also ask why should people indulge day in and day out only in cheap entertainment? The fact is serials -one after another -are doing exactly that. The directors cannot think of anything better or else, they would not have continually catered to such tastes alone.
In a society, where selfie craze is razing like a wildfire, where social sites occupy the major part of life, anything classic or of some intellectual height will prove indigestible. People appear to be incapable of thinking rationally except when the matters concern their interests. There is a tendency to derive pleasure instantly. That to get something beautiful and nice, one has to wait and endure some pain and frustration is not in most people's dictionary. The serials entertain them constantly and instantly. Events just take place this way or that way. The visual appeal is great, thank to advanced technology and finishing in the laboratory. But they do not leave a lasting impression on the mind. When there are serials galore, the shifting from one to another is even very comical. If those could have something worthy to offer this kind of visual promiscuity would have been impossible.
What they give at the end of the day is hardly questioned. Sure enough, the TV channels have some compulsion because of their 24-hour programmes. It is not easy to produce quality programmes for such a long duration. So serials become a good filler. But then one cannot help questioning the purpose of such serials. Do they want to entertain only? Along with entertainment, there is a need for educating people and developing their taste for the better. This hardly ever happens.
