How learning a new language can boost one’s studies

All of us have a first language, which we love to call our mother tongue. But as soon as the academic journey begins, we start realising and also are told the importance of another language. In the context of Bangladesh, this other language must be English, the global script of communication. Even while receiving primary education, students must adapt their English curriculums.
English has undoubtedly become our second language because of its international acceptance. But when someone opts for a special journey, to a special aim to study more-to know and achieve more-nourishing a third or even fourth language can be very handy.
Choosing the language: But we cannot avoid the question of which one or two foreign languages we should learn. Is it German, is it going to be Spanish, or should we dive into the ocean of ancient languages such as Sanskrit or a somewhat complicated one like Mandarin?
We all are pretty habituated to a proverb that says, "Necessity is the mother of invention." While choosing a solution, one needs to signify the equation first. The primary subjects of their higher studies, the locality where they want to move to, and the culture they want to mingle with are the parameters to decide on the language. Fitting the choices into your question and calculation is the real challenge here.
How it will help in studies: If an undergrad or college student starts learning a new language rather than their mother tongue or English, it will automatically enhance their analysis power. And to be fully involved in studies, researching on their own badly needs this skill. Analytical skill is simultaneously required for one's personal, academic and professional life and learning a foreign language can hone this ability very sharply. Rather than that, it also gets the memory game on when a person starts stocking new and newer words in their brain. In between seeing a word, putting it into your head and sticking it to the knowledge storage is a repetitive process which helps us remember things more intensely.
It can be said without doubt that when a literature student opts for bigger goals in their academic life, learning French or Russian can provide them with a fresh and raw version of books like The Outsider (The Stranger) by Albert Camus or Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. Familiarising with another language opens the doorway to all its literature, science, philosophy, entertainment and what not. With a new language, one can enter into a whole new culture because it is language that keeps the dots connected over any geological and social structure.
It is not an unknown matter nowadays that a big part of the youngsters of our country aim to study abroad from a very early period of life. The list of countries abroad mainly includes the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, etc. If and when they get a chance to study in one of the cherished destinations, a fundamental thing must haunt them and it is nothing but the language. Without language, we are almost unable to communicate, and when you are going to a new place, you need the communication to be very smooth. Fluent English can help with it, but one also should keep in mind where they are starting from; only some are comfortable with English. The reason is they will not only be confined in a classroom, there must be a social life around the academic campus. And being in a very healthy and smooth social circle also directly helps with a successful campus life. To build that bond, learning the local language can bring too many brownie points for an international student. Learning the language can be very helpful for getting involved in various academic and non-academic activities while studying abroad.
Thus, after being acquainted with the local language, a student's mental health would also not be dependable on the barriers of language- which has its perks while being away from one's familiar world.
How to grab the skill: Every skill or new thing can be learnt or taught over time. It needs regular and patienceful practice, some unique techniques to emerge into the process and the passion towards learning would increase daily.
A fruitful way to learn a language is through daily conversation, playing word games, media consumption with or without subtitles, etc. Learning a language is a foremost necessity to enrich one's vocabulary. If you know the words, it is even possible to understand the tactics of grammar. Of course, this is a beginner's tactic, and with time, the rules will also come to you eventually.
World-famous filmmaker Federico Fellini once said, "A different language is a different vision of life." To achieve a novel and clearer perspective of life while helping with our jobs and studies, one should jump into the world of unknown words and letters because learning a new language is thrilling.
If someone is interested in preparing to learn a new language, they can check out the available courses at Alliance Française, Institute of Modern Languages (University of Dhaka), BRAC Institute of Languages in Dhaka etc.
