How often should clothes be washed?

Tahseen Nower Prachi | Wednesday, 26 April 2023

Just a few days back, TikToker Allison Delperdang's TikTok questioned if people still wore the same pajamas more than one night in a row or if it is uncommon now. The comment section of the original TikTok is crazy, and the video got enormous clicks.
But apart from that, the question applies not only to nightwear but to literally every piece of clothing. How long should a dress be repeated before washing? The answer may also vary from personal choice to social and cultural context.
Not washing clothes when you must or washing more than you should - both have their own lines of problems. Not washing daily wear after regular use may create hygiene issues and cause skin diseases and fungal infections. Washing the same cloth too often can be damaging to the fabric and also wasteful. So, it is important to know how often a certain fabric should be washed, especially clothes that are used regularly.

Clothes that need daily washing
Clothes in direct contact with the skin must be washed daily, e.g. undergarments, socks, leggings, skinny textured fabrics etc. Socks can smell really bad if not washed regularly, accompanied by the obvious risk of fungal infections.
The pieces of clothes that are sweaty or odorous or are covered in dust must be washed daily with detergent before subsequent use. Reusing dirty or smelly clothes increases the chances of serious skin problems. T-shirts, tank tops and camisoles should be washed after each wearing.
Gym clothes or playing jerseys, shorts that are often dirty from sweat or dust - all fall under this category.
Clothes that can be reused without daily wash
Generally, most clothes can be used more than once without a wash if they are not in direct contact with the skin. Shirts, dresses or skirts, scarfs, sarees or something one uses over undergarments. But those who avoid undergarments should wash their shirt-pants daily. The 'wear more than once' option should only be used if bathing and cleaning daily is a habit of the individual. Those with a higher precipitation tendency should also avoid using the same cloth more than once without washing.
But washing bras, especially padded ones, is not a good idea as it can ruin the fabric and the padding. Bras should be washed after 3-4 times of usage.
Outer clothes like dress shirts and khakis can be worn a few times before washing unless it is hot out and you are sweating, or they are visibly dirty or stained.
Household items like towels or bedding should follow a standard timeline - bedsheets and pillowcases should be washed once a week, for example.
Clothes that don't need washing for a long time
Dresses and suits worn for parties do not need daily cleaning; they can be used many times, considering they were in a clean environment for a comparatively short amount of time. Jeans can be worn many times before washing, for they can prevent external compounds like dirt from coming into direct contact with the body. Jackets, coats, and sarees can be reused many times but may need occasional cleaning, washing or drying.
Regular-wear shoes should be cleaned at least once a month. If not the whole shoe - at least the insoles should be cleaned.
