How to cope with heatwave

Thursday, 11 May 2023

A mild heatwave has been sweeping over Bangladesh and may continue reportedly for two-three more days. It is causing great discomfort almost everywhere in the country. Temperatures are soaring to unprecedented levels, making it difficult for people to carry out their daily activities. However, with proper precautionary measures, people can stay safe and healthy even during such extreme weather conditions. The heat wave is resulting in temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius, which is well above the average for this time of year. The highest temperature on Monday was recorded in Chuadanga at 41 degrees Celsius while the mercury climbed to a maximum of 39.4 degrees Celsius in Dhaka. The situation is exacerbated by the high humidity levels.
In this situation, we should take precautionary measures to protect ourselves from this heatwave. We must stay hydrated and avoid spending too much time in the sun. Those who are required to work outside must find shaded areas or wear hats or caps to protect their skin. Loose and lightweight clothing should also be put on so that the air circulates and keeps us cool. Pregnant women, sick and the elderly must stay indoors, particularly during the day to avoid the adverse impact of the heat on their health. Everyone should be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Some of the symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headaches, rapid heartbeat and confusion. If people experience any of these symptoms, they must immediately seek medical attention.
