HRW depicts a sorry picture
Saturday, 25 January 2014
Bangladesh has fallen down drastically on Human Rights Watch Index. It is no wonder as the year 2013 was full of human rights abuse by the political parties. According to the report, the authority was engaged in violent and illegal measures against the protesters. It even failed to start any kind of investigation into allegations against unlawful torture and deaths at the hands of the law enforcers. Hundreds of people died and scores were seriously injured in political violence last year.
The ruling party showed its extreme irritation towards any kind of dissidence which is not a sign of democracy. The whole report depicts a sorry picture of our country that hurts our image in the wide world. Our leaders talk about human rights and rule of law before assuming power. But when they assume power; they start acting like an authoritarian regime. The political parties shouldn't forget that, nowadays, the citizens have become too smart, well-informed and educated to be fooled for a long time. I hope we will see drastic improvement in the human rights situation in 2014.
