The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Limited, Bangladesh has undertaken a number of initiatives to celebrate 400 years of Dhaka as a capital city this year.

As part of the programmes, HSBC has commissioned a map, which showcases places of historical importance in Dhaka's history. The map carries brief introductions about these places as well as locations of HSBC within the city.

"The map highlighted the great architectural achievements that were part of Dhaka's long history as a capital and we hoped that the people would cherish this as a keepsake for future generations," said HSBC Bangladesh Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Steve Banner while launching the map in a press conference at a city hotel Tuesday.

"The map is currently available at select stores including Etcetera, Word and Pages and will be available at other venues very soon," he said.

Replying to a question, he said initial sale price of each map has been fixed at Tk 100.

"HSBC believes in giving something back to the community in which it operates and we have been proud to offer our support a variety of good causes including underprivileged children's education, helping the needy and disabled, helping preserve the environment and disaster relief and promoting Bengali culture for more than 10 years," said Mustafizur R. Khan, head of the marketing and communications of HSBC.

"In keeping with this philosophy, we will be donating all funds raised through the sale of the map to local charities," he added.

In additional, HSBC is sponsoring a drama on 400 years of Dhaka, which will be shown at the national theatre in Segun Bagicha from July 17. The show will be open to the public from July 20 with the entire proceeds from that show going to charity.

"HSBC has also sponsored the works of three of the country's renowned photographers-Babu Ahmed, Munem Wasif and Taimur.

Their pictures capturing the essence of old Dhaka will be showcased at Drik Gallery from July 13," Mr. Mustafizur said.
