FE Report | Monday, 14 July 2008

Commemorating the 400th year of Dhaka as a city, a photography exhibition titled '400 Years of Dhaka' was opened in the Drik Gallery of the city Sunday.

Sponsored by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited in Bangladesh (HSBC), the exhibition was organised by Traditional Photo Gallery.

Chief Executive Officer of HSBC in Bangladesh Steve Banner inaugurated the exhibition on Sunday afternoon. Head of Marketing and Communication of HSBC in Bangladesh Mustafizur R Khan was also present at that time.

A total of 78 photographic illustrations of age old mosques, tombs, temples, churches and various manor houses of times dating back to the sixteenth century to the early twentieth century captured by Babu Ahmed, Munem Wasef and Taibur has found their place in the exhibition.

It also hosts a number of rare age old illustrations of Dhaka city retrieved from a now lost nineteenth century book as well as a panorama of the Dhaka city drawn by an unknown artist back in the eighteenth century.

As part of Dhaka's 400 years' celebration, HSBC will concurrently organise seminars on the 14th and 15th of this month and will also stage the play titled "Bawanna Bazar Tippanna Gali" from July 17 to 19 and from July 20 to 21 at Shilpakala Academy and on August 1 at the Jahir Raihan Auditorium of the city.

Last month, HSBC also unveiled a map featuring the location of various historical sites of Dhaka city as part of the same celebration.

The 10 day long exhibition will last until July 22 and will be open everyday from 3 am to 8 am.
