HSC results

THIS year's HSC results have frustrated many examinees and their guardians. Particularly the newly introduced system of citing numerical scores along side GPA (Grade Point Average) in the mark sheet has fuelled this frustration. A simple example will illustrate the whole issue.
Although 79 and 80 are numerically almost the same, there is a significant difference between them on the GPA scale (A & A+ respectively) and that is why, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, in a verdict, has directed the authorities concerned to cite numerical marks in the mark sheet along with GPA obtained, for the sake of transparency in admission to the eleventh class. In the light of the above verdict, public universities and medical colleges should follow the same system and accordingly required qualifications for admission in the eleventh class should be fixed on the basis of the numerical marks obtained. This reasonable step would greatly help remove irregularities and coaching business from the educational institutions and would also bring relief for the frustrated candidates (and their guardians) who narrowly missed the desired GPA score.
