CHITTAGONG, Aug 24: A huge quantity of dates imported for consumption during the ensuing holy month of Ramadan, has been lying with the Chittagong port.
Importers have been refraining from taking delivery of the imported consignments of dates due to non-issuance of SRO concerning withdrawal of duties, sources said.
Withdrawal of import duty on date has already been announced so that the consumers can procure it at a reasonable price during the month of Ramadan. In this context, a large number of LCs have been opened for importing dates.
The trading houses, which have not imported dates earlier, have also joined the trade of importing dates. As a result, huge quantities of dates have been stockpiled at the Chittagong port.
The importers are waiting for tax withdrawal facility before receiving the consignments.
But as necessary SRO has not yet arrived at the Chittagong Customs House and since the previous rates of duties are still in force, the importers are not taking delivery of the lots of dates resulting in huge quantities of dates stockpiled in the port area, sources said.
