CHITTAGONG, Oct 18: A big amount of money worth around Tk. 23 billion earned at Chittagong port (CP) has been lying idle at the principal port of the country since long.
Port users and concerned circles of the country have called for proper investment or well-utilisation of such a huge amount of money which has been lying unutilised due to political turmoil and bureaucratic complications during the tenure of the previous governments.
As a new horizon of changes has now unveiled in all spheres of CP in the context of the changed circumstances of the country, the port users' forum expects a time, befitting initiative to be undertaken for proper investment of the idle money in different important works like construction of a few more container terminals and installation of gantry cranes thus making the port a self-sufficient one.
Although such a huge amount of money has been lying at the disposal of the CP, it is still using a 35 to 40-year old crane. The construction of much-awaited New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) has not been finished even within 10 years. CP is yet to be equipped with gantry crane facilities.
Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) was capable of being equipped with the facilities of installation of gantry cranes even a decade ago while undue and unhealthy political influence and bureaucratic complications during the rule of the previous governments stood as a barrier in the field of implementation of those projects.
Concerned sources said, CP earns around Taka 75 billion annually. After meeting all expenditures, a big amount of money upto Taka four billion remains as profit.
