Huge quantity of sugar unsold at Joypurhat mill

JOYPURHAT, June 2: A huge amount of sugar is remaining unsold in Joypurhat Sugar Mill.
The mill produced more than 11 thousand tonnes of sugar by crushing over 165 thousand tonnes of sugarcane after starting production on November 23 last year.
Of this sugar, more than 4,000 tonnes have remained unsold.
As per demand of peasants, the mill authority sold sugar at Tk 31 per kg from May 12 to May 22 and paid Tk 10 million (1 crore) to the peasants.
The managing director of Joypurhat Sugar Mill, Mofakkharul Islam, said the selling rate has deteriorated as the government fixed the price at Tk 34 per kg.
