Huge railway land under illegal occupation in Syedpur

NILPHAMARI, May 13: Nearly 600 acres of railway land and more than half of the quarters built for the workers and employees is under illegal occupation in railway workshop town Syedpur.
Sources said this has happened due to negligence of the concern authorities of the past for not taking proper initiative at proper time. As a result the situation has gone under complexities. Out of 800 acres of land of the workshop only 225 acres are under possession of the railway including the workshop area and some residential land having residential quarters. A case on 52 acres of land is still pending with court.
While contacted one official of the workshop said there are 2488 quarters built for the workers and employees of the workshop out of which bona fide and existing railway employees reside in 1018 quarters but the rest 1470 quarters are under illegal occupation of retired employees.
While contacted one official of the workshop Golam Mostafa said attempts are on to regain the grabbed land. Workers' leader Moksedul Momin said railway quarters illegally residing by the retired employees may be evacuated but recovery of grabbed land would need concerted afford.
