Human-chain at DU to raise age limit for govt jobs to 35

DU CORRESPONDENT | Monday, 30 March 2026

A group of job-seekers staged a human-chain in front of the Raju Sculpture at the Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday, demanding that the maximum age limit for the government job applications be permanently increased to at least 35 years.
Under the banner of 'General Students Seeking Employment', the protesters opined that while life expectancy has increased and the retirement age has been adjusted over time, the entry age limit for the government jobs has remained stagnant. Currently capped at 30 years, the limit is depriving many qualified candidates of opportunities.
The demonstrators called on the government to set the age limit at a minimum of 35 years on a permanent basis. They also urged the authorities to consider a temporary extension to 37-40 years for those adversely affected by academic session delays, the COVID-19 pandemic, and lack of sufficient recruitment circulars.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Sohel Amin, a job-seeker, said the job-seekers have been campaigning for this demand for the past 14 years. Although a commission was formed, its recommendations were not implemented. Instead, the age limit was set at 32 years, which they reject.
Another job-seeker, Mominul Islam, noted that several political parties had pledged to raise the age limit in their election manifestos, but those promises are yet to be fulfilled. He added that by international standards, the age limit should be at least 40 years.
The protesters warned that if their demands are not met, they would intensify their movement in the coming days.
