CHITTAGONG, Apr 27: People of all walks of life today staged demonstration and formed human chain to press home their demand for immediate execution of the Karnafuli Gas Distribution Company (KGDC).
Greater Chittagong Development Action Committee organised the programme in front of Chittagong Press Club this morning.
Several thousand people formed human chain on the Jamal Khan Road from 11:00am and later held a protest rally in front of the press club. Leaders of different trade bodies and contractors of Bakhrabad Gas Systems Ltd also joined the programme.
The protestors said Chittagong was contributing over 65 per cent of the revenue earning of the BGSL but they alleged that they had to face a lot of trouble in every step of getting even domestic gas connections.
They said the KGDC was conceived at the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. A director, officials and employees were also appointed for running the company but the vested interest group in Comilla recently opposed the operation of the company.
"The people of Chittagong will launch a strong agitation programme, if the functioning of the KGDC was obstructed," said immediate past president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed.
Earlier, City Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, CCCI president MA Latif MP, Metropolitan Chamber president Abdus Salam and Nurul Islam BSc MP in separate statements demanded immediate implementation of the KGDC and sought PM's interference on the issue.
