RAJSHAHI, Oct 28 (UNB): Plantation of hybrid apple-jujube is gaining popularity in Durgapur Upazila of the district for its high yield and windfall profit.
Sources said local farmers are planting saplings of this variety on their lands to change their lot with a minimum production cost. Many of them are cultivating jujube on their mango orchards.
Especially, the hybrid jujube saplings were being planted in massive scale at Ratugram, Alipur, Ujalkalsi, Arail, Badail, Belgharia villages of the Upazila.
The marginal farmers are making jujube-garden on their house premises and other lands as a tree bears fruit after one year of plantation. Both the soil and weather here are suitable for its cultivation.
Samad, a farmer of Alipur village, said he has planted 600 jujube saplings on his land and is expecting 10-12 kilogram fruits in the first year of cultivation from each of the trees.
Another grower Mofiz Master said: "I have made an orchard of 500 jujube plants last year. And I hope that I will get profit of Tk one lakh this year."
Saleh Ahmed, agriculture official of the Upazila, said necessary measures have been taken so that the growers can achieve bumper production of the tasty and juicy fruit.
