FE Report
The country can produce an additional quantity of rice worth about Tk 12.60 billion annually through lessening the existing yield gap between the research and field-levels, a Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) official said. The average rice yield gap between research and field-level output is estimated at about 1.74 per hectare, BRRI study says. "If that yield gap could be minimised up to 60 per cent by using the BRRI technologies including cultivation of high yielding varieties (HYV) of rice, farmers could earn an additional Tk 18,000 a hectare," said the recent study of BRRI. The total rice area of the country in three seasons is about 11.7 million hectares, the study revealed. "Local farmers could harvest around Tk 1260-billion worth of additional rice annually throughout the country, if a major portion of that area could be brought under the plantation of HYV crops along with proper application of advanced cultivation processes," a senior BRRI official told the FE, citing the study. The official, however, said the details of the study will be disclosed today (Thursday) at a BRRI workshop BRRI Director General Dr. Md Abdul Mannan is expected to attend as the chief guest while Director (Admin) Dr. Md Syedul Islam, Director (Research) Dr. Md Khairul Bashar, Principal Scientific Officer Dr. Md Humayun Kabir of the BRRI will participate in the day-long workshop to be held at the BRRI headquarters at Gazipur, said the official. More than a hundred representatives including scientists, experts, university professors along with government and non-government officials are also expected to take part in the workshop. According to the organizers, the issue of minimising rice yield gap was worthy of getting national priority when it comes to food security.
