FARIDPUR, Nov 06: Melamine mixed powdered milk is still being used at ice cream factories, sweetmeat factories and bakeries in Faridpur district while the milk men raised the price of cow milk to Tk 55 from Tk 25 in a week as demands for fresh cow milk for children and at tea stalls and sweet meat shops have quickly increased.
The news of using melamine mixed powder milk at ice cream, sweet meat factories and bakeries has made them quite puzzled.
However, the sale of packed milk powders of all varieties has declined sharply because, according to the retailer's reports of melamine in powder milk have been discouraging the consumers of the town. Meantime demand of Milk Vita has increased, but the supply of fresh liquid milk supply is short of demand. Most of the consumers have no alternative but to buy milk powder or liquid milk for their babies.
Md Abul Kalam, a retired government officer said that for the past couple of days he had been in desperate search for his village milkman, who used to supply fresh cow milk for his granddaughter. Rafiq Miah, owner of a tea stall at the town centre said customers' order for raw tea or with cowmilk has increased.
Mr Abdul Halim, father of a baby, said: "I am confused as I don't know which one I should buy for my two year-old daughter". Moslem Miah, owner of the shop, does not know how to serve his customers searching for tea with melamine-free milk.
Afroja Halim, a college teacher, Tania Moslem Mukta, a service holder and Rashidul Haque a bank officer said: "We don't know what to feed our children, what to use for preparing break fast tea or how to keep our children from ice cream, sweet meat or bakery items.
Early in this month it was reported in local media that one 10-month old son of Alam Khan and Sunni Akter and a daughter of Delower Hossain of Alipur area of the town were admitted into Faridpur Medical College after taking a melamine mixed milk powder.
