Ice storm causes havoc across US South

The second winter storm in two weeks to hit the US South encrusted the region in ice, knocking out electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses before pushing toward the heavily populated Northeast. The storm was threatening to dump up to 20 inches (51 centimeters) of snow Thursday to some areas in the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. At least 11 deaths across the region were blamed on the treacherous weather Wednesday, including three people who were killed when an ambulance careened off an icy Texas road and caught fire. Nearly 3,300 airline flights nationwide were cancelled, according to a news agency.
