ICES advises against cod fishing in N Sea

Sunday, 10 June 2007

COPENHAGEN, June 9 (AFP): The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) yesterday advised against all fishing of cod in the North Sea, Kattegat, the eastern Baltic Sea and the English Channel.
An ICES report published yesterday said cod stocks in those waters have not improved since a 2006 assessment and "the cod biomass is still very low".
"We have been calling for a ban on cod fishing in these waters since 2003. But no one listened to us as the governments had other considerations to take into account, such as the interests of the industries," Hans Larssen, head of the ICES consultative committee, told AFP.
According to Larssen, the group of international scientists at the Copenhagen-based ICES "advise against all cod fishing in these zones in 2008 as well."
