Tuesday, 9 June 2015

The war crimes tribunal will deliver its verdict on Syed Md Hasan Ali on Tuesday. Hasan Ali, tried in absentia, has been indicted for killing 24 people and for abduction and torture of 12 persons at Mymensingh's Kishoreganj subdivision (now Kishoreganj district) during Bangladesh's independence struggles 44 years ago. He is also charged with setting fire and looting 125 households. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 chief Enayetur Rahim announced the verdict date on Monday. The verdict was awaited on April 20 after both sides concluded arguments. Hasan Ali, son of a local collaborator, is the fifth person to be convicted of war crimes in absentia since the trials started in 2010. His notoriety in Tarail upazila of Kishoreganj in 1971 earned him nicknames like ‘Razakar Daroga’ and ‘Razakar OC’. Whereabouts of the 68-year old war criminal remains unknown. An estimated three million people were killed and millions of others were displaced and forced to seek shelter in India during the 9-month liberation war in 1971, according to a news agency.
