ICT can help expedite economic progress

Speakers called for giving due importance to the expansion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as this sector could help expedite economic progress of the country keeping pace with the present trend of globalization, reports BSS.
The speakers were addressing the inaugural ceremony of three-day national workshop on 'The Use of ICTs in the Field of Entrenching the Values of Dialogue and Human Rights in the Minds and Acts of Leadership' in the conference hall of BANBEIS Bhaban in the city Monday.
Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU), Ministry of Education and Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) jointly organised the workshop.
Secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Kazi Habibul Awal attended the function as the chief guest while director general of Islamic Foundation Bangladesh Fazlur Rahman, Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury and Joint Secretary of Education Ministry Shafiqul Alam were the special guests.
Habibul Awal said the country has failed to explore the potentials of the ICT sector as well as reaping maximum benefit out of it for development purpose although the sector had witnessed a revolutionary change throughout the world.
He also said ICT could play an important role to minimise corruption in the society.
Fazlur Rahman said computer studies should be made compulsory at the primary level education to prepare our children for the present competitive world.
Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury said apart from exchanging and disseminating information, the ICT could play a pioneering role in the establishment of human rights in society. He said the expansion of the sector is essential to build a knowledge-based society.
Shafiqul Alam said if the ICT sector was equipped with appropriate human resources and technologies it would be able to fetch huge foreign currencies.
Director of ISESCO Regional Office Abbas Sadri attended the function as the guest of honour with vice chancellor of Islamic University of Technology Prof Dr Imtiaz Hossain in the chair. Secretary of BNCU Dr Mahmudul Hassan made the welcome speech at the function.
