If judiciary is not separated right now, it'll never happen: Moeen

Tuesday, 23 October 2007

Army chief General Moeen U Ahmed said separation of the judiciary from the executive is a difficult task, but it has to be started right now, or else it would never happen.
Addressing a gathering of expatriate Bangladeshis at a city near Boston in the USA, the army chief said the independent judiciary would start functioning on November 1, according to media reports in Boston, states UNB.
General Moeen alleged that political governments had made commitments in the last 15 years to separate the judiciary from the executive control, but none of them implemented it. "The present government announced to implement it."
Replying to a volley of questions from the audience on the remarks made by some members of administrative cadre working as judicial magistrates, the army chief said, "Some magistrates are talking about it, it's difficult to start because the required number of judges are not available right at the moment, they have to be trained…, they need to understand the rules, regulations and go ahead."
"But, if it's not started right now, it'll never happen… For the last 15 years, this issue was discussed, but there was no work. There may be some difficulties with every task, but we have to find out the solution to it," he said.
About the apprehension that some political parties might not participate in the next general election, General Moeen said the government would want all the political parties to follow the roadmap.
"Fourteen months are a long time… Wait and see. We want all the political parties to follow the roadmap announced by the government and the Election Commission… we all want that a fair election will be held in the country and then we'll have an elected government."
The army chief informed the audience that the matter of giving national VIP treatment to expatriate Bangladeshis is now at the final stage and it would be announced soon.
"You will get priority at police stations, in healthcare services… in buying property… you'll enjoy quota and get priority in those cases," he said.
