If necessary govt will cancel Sadarghat terminal lease deal: Minister

Marine Safety Week 2010 began Sunday aiming at raising people's awareness about security of water transports and water routes to ensure a secure and fair water transport system, reports UNB.
This is for the second time the week is being observed in the country from April 18 to 24.
The theme of this year's Maritime Safety Week is "Nou Pathe Nirapatta -Anbe Deshey Safolata" (Maritime Security, Brings Success to the Country).
Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan inaugurated the week at the city's Sadarghat terminal.
The shipping minister said if necessary, the process of leasing Dhaka's Sadarghat terminal would be cancelled from July 1 for the benefit of the people who were fed up due to harassment and extreme ill behaviour of the lease holders.
He said the government had taken a number of steps for strengthening the safety of water routes and water transport security including arrangements for training of masters of water transports and others concerned and mandatory registration of water transports.
Some 60 lifebuoys were distributed among various launch owners in the function to ensure more safety to passengers.
Presided over by acting secretary of Shipping Ministry Abdul Mannan Hawlader, the function was also addressed, among others, by chairman of the BIWTC Golam Mostofa Kamal, MA Malek of BIWTA, DG of Sea Transport Directorate Rear Admiral (Retd) Bazlur Rahman, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Association President Mahbubuddin Ahmed, Bangladesh Oil carrying Ship Owners' Association President TM Giasuddin, Bangladesh Coastal Ship Owners' Association President Rashed Hasan, Bangladesh Bulkhead Boat Owners' Association Senior Vice-chairman, Rabiul Alam, Bangladesh Ship Workers' Federation President Shukkur Ahmed and Bangladesh Water Transport Workers' Federation General Secretary Ashiqul Islam Chowdhury.
