If no acceptable polls, BD may be isolated from world: EC

FE REPORT | Monday, 1 January 2024

Election Commissioner (EC) Md Anisur Rahman expressed concern on Sunday that Bangladesh might get isolated from the world if the upcoming 12th parliament elections were not free, fair and acceptable.
He made the observation while inaugurating a training course for executive magistrates on the occasion of the upcoming polls at the Bangabandhu International Conference  Centre in the capital's Agargaon area.
"Holding a free, fair and acceptable election as per our (EC) perspective might not be enough as the world is continuing to watch us," the EC said.
"Without a free, fair and acceptable election, our (Bangladesh) future would be uncertain," he said adding that everything, especially financial, social issues, trade and commerce might come to a standstill, and thus the country might be isolated from the world.
Mr Anisur Rahman further said that the national election would be held on January 7, 2024 and the Election Commission was striving to ensure a fair, free, participatory and acceptable election.
Executive magistrates have been deployed at the field level since November 28 to enforce the electoral code of conduct. A total of 431 executive magistrates participated in the day-long training.
