Iftekhar calls for peace in Congo

Friday, 31 October 2008

Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury Thursday called for an end to fighting in Congo and urged all sides in the conflict to put an end to the bitterness that has been the tragedy of that potentially rich but unfortunate country, reports UNB.
The Adviser further said: "The humanitarian consequences of the on-going civil war would be disastrous. The people of the Democratic Republic of Congo have suffered too much for too long.
Dr Iftekhar also called upon the governments of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to work together to end the conflict.
Thousands of refugees from the fighting were gathering in the eastern Congolese city of Goma and becoming a cause for great concern to the United Nations.
"Bangladesh supports the positive role of the UN in the Democratic Republic of Congo", the Foreign Adviser added.
