IGP ultimatum on bike reg

FE Report | Monday, 18 May 2015

Police have planned to launch a countrywide crackdown on unregistered motorbikes from June 3 next as many of such bikes are being used in committing crimes like mugging, robbery and killing, officials have said.
Because of the poor enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act, the trend of riding unregistered bikes was gradually going up and it could cause a serious threat to the law and order situation in the country, they have said.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque at a press briefing at the Police Headquarters on Sunday also said about the special drive against such two wheelers.
The police chief said he had been travelling various parts of the country over the years and found that the Motor Vehicles Act was not being enforced properly as a large number of motorbikes having no registration were there on the streets.
He said nearly 90 per cent of the motorbikes were unregistered and the police would take stern action against them. "No unregistered motorbikes will be allowed on the streets and a special drive will be launched in this connection from June 3 next," the IGP said.
Giving a 15-day deadline to have registration, Mr. Haque said the unauthorised bike owners must comply with the instruction on registration to avert action.
He said the seized two wheelers would be kept in police custody until submission of registration-related documents to the police stations concerned.
The police boss further added that vehicles in the process of getting registration beyond June 3 would be exempted from the purview if the bikers can produce necessary papers like money receipts for registration to support their cause.
A senior DMP official said criminals had been using unregistered bikes for committing crimes but the law enforcers in many cases could not detect those vehicles and drivers in the absence of registration.
"And it caused sufferings to in many ways," he said, adding that more than 60 pert cent of the criminal activities were being carried out by unregistered motorbikes.
