IGW operator Kay likely to lose licence

The international gateway (IGW) operator Kay Telecommunication Limited is likely to lose its operating licence soon over non-payment of its outstanding dues.
Sources with the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) said the BTRC already completed necessary paperwork to give the defaulter IGW operator a permanent farewell.
Seeking anonymity, a high official at the BTRC told FE that the authorities would immediately seek necessary endorsement from the concerned ministry to cancel the operating licence of the absconding company.
It said the Kay Telecommunication had been remaining unseen since late 2013 with nearly Tk 910 million lying overdue.
The official said failing to recover the dues from the IGW operator, the BTRC took recourse to the legal procedure against the defaulter IGW service provider.
"Very recently, the telecom watchdog lodged a case with the Banani Police Station under the 'Public Demand Recovery Act'", the official added.
Earlier, the telecom regulator served a showcase notice on the defaulter asking it to repay the dues within 30 days and also asking it to explain why the IGW operator's licence should not be cancelled as it violated the commission's rules.
However, few days later the commission found the show-cause notice returned untouched as the company was not there at the registered address--16th floor, RCC tower.
Later, on May 20, the commission again published a notice in the media asking the company to reply within ten days since the publication of the notice, but the operator failed to respond yet.
The notice signed by BTRC Deputy Director Sajeda Parvin also indicated further legal procedures against the IGW operator in the event of failure to respond.
