Anti-competitive practices involved with the country's goods transportation sector (trucking) are seriously affecting the national economic growth by hampering export activities and increasing the prices of essentials, a report released Monday said.
Local think-tank Shamunnay in its quarterly publication named Bangladesh Economic Outlook said this.
According to the report, the transport cost in Bangladesh is between Tk 2.76 and Tk 6.76 per tonne. On the other hand, it ranges between Tk 1.13 and 1.58 in Pakistan, and between Tk 1.43 and Tk 2.03 in India, the report claimed.
The report said extortion from trucks plying on Dhaka-Chittagong route includes 14.8 per cent of the total transportation cost, on Chittagong-Dhaka route 9.8 per cent, on Benapole-Dhaka route 13.5 per cent and on Bogra-Dhaka route 3.1 per cent.
"This additional cost contributes to raise the prices of essential commodities in the local markets and also makes the country's export items less competitive in the global market," said said Selim Raihan, a professor of economics of Dhaka University and presenter of the report.
