Tuesday, 3 July 2007

DUBAI, July 2 (PTI): About 27,500 immigrants, including 7,000 Indians residing illegally in Kuwait, have left during the two-month amnesty period granted by the government, country's interior ministry has said.
The amnesty, which began May 1 and ended on June 30, allowed the illegal immigrants to legalise their residential status or to leave the country without paying any fines.
Around 200 to 250 illegal residents left the country everyday.
Bangladeshis, residing illegally in the country, formed that single largest group who took advantage of the amnesty, 'The Kuwait Times' reported.
Filipinos the second while Sri Lankans were the third largest group, the report said.
Earlier, an Indian embassy official said that the embassy had issued nearly 7,000 emergency certificates, which enables a person to take advantage of the amnesty.
