CHITTAGONG, Dec 25 : A large number of fishermen working for the dishonest owners of fishing trawlers have been engaged in fishing illegally in the Bay of Bengal defying government rules.
Violating government rules, these fishermen are catching fish indiscriminately, irrespective of size or species, everyday in the Bay of Bengal, sources said.
Although unauthorised fishing is going on in front of the officials of the fisheries directorate and other law enforcement agencies, they are quite indifferent to such plunder of fish resources in the Bay.
A fisherman, who is engaged in such illegal fishing, told the FE that from tiny fry to large sharks, nothing was spared by them.
If such harmful practice continues, the country will face a serious fish crisis in future, which, in turn, would affect the national economy adversely, experts feared.
In the circumstances, immediate government action has been sought in this connection.
