Illegal items arriving through Teknaf

Our Correspondent | Tuesday, 29 July 2008

CHITTAGONG, July 28: Under the shade of the imported goods under Bangladesh-Myanmar boarder trade agreement, consignments of contraband items are arriving in Bangladesh.

The very incident of seizing of a truck loaded with three sacks of contraband vitamin capsules under cover of imported consignments of plum from Khatunganj, the main commercial centre of Chittagong, Wednesday, was a glaring example of illegal trade, concerned sources said.

The illegal items arriving through Teknaf, are being sent to different parts of the country. Illegal trade of different goods like fuel oil, current net, yaba, contraceptives pill (Maya bori), drugs, injections, vitamin capsules, nut, fertiliser, locks, cosmetics, spices, scraps of vehicles and electronic items, is taking place between Bangladesh and Myanmar through trucks, covered vans and boats in guise of border trade, the sources added.

Sometimes these illegal items are coming in the same sacks under false declaration of other goods and also along with the consignments of other goods in excess volume beyond declaration.

Consignments of contraband goods are being seized in different areas of Cox's Bazar including Teknaf following drives conducted by the law-enforcers. Sometimes, these are also seized on arrival at Chittagong.
