Illegal occupation by restaurant owner alleged

FE Report | Thursday, 5 June 2008

A senior executive of multinational company SINGER alleged that Managing Director of Global Suppliers Limited Shahrear Ali was running his business illegally occupying a house that belonged to the executive, even after expiry of the contract.

"On February 28, 2006, four months before the expiry of the contract, a notice was served to Global Suppliers for vacating the house by June 30, 2006. But even two years after the expiry of the contract they are refusing to vacate the premises," said Itrat Husain, controller and finance director of SINGER Bangladesh Limited, at a press conference in the city Wednesday.

"The property was leased out to Global Suppliers for a period of three years from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2006 and the agreement was signed by me and Shahrear Ali," he said.

Shahrear is running a restaurant named A and W, renting the house situated at SE B-2, Gulshan Avenue, which is owned by Itrat Husain.

This correspondent could not make any contact with the MD of Global Suppliers as he is now in Singapore. Later, contact was made with General Manger of A and W restaurant Shamim who refuted Itrat's allegation saying, "The contract we made with Itrat Husain will expire in June 2010 but not on June 30, 2006."

Itrat also refuted the above comment of Shamim and said, "All he said is false. I have valid documents. The first contract was cancelled and later, the contract was renewed for the period from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2006."

He said, "in June 2003 Global Suppliers filed false a case against me alleging that I went to the restaurant with hoodlums and vandalised the property. Subsequent investigations by the police proved the allegations to be false and thereafter court gave a ruling in favour of me (Itrat Husain) on September 3, 2007", he added.

"I was threatened by Shahrear Ali on two occasions, which compelled me to file a GD with Gulshan Thana," Itrat alleged.
