Illegal occupation of Ichhamati river sparks protest in Pabna

PABNA, May 25: A food company here occupied a portion of Ichhamati river located Anonto area that disrupted smooth flow of water of the district headquarter sparked protest among the people of Pabna.
A cross section people staged demonstration protesting the illegal occupation of the river demanding to remove the occupation.
The demonstrators brought out a protest procession near the Shitlai ghat of Ananto area of the district headquarter where the grabbers started occupying a portion of the river over last few days.
Pabna Sadar upazila parishad chairman Mosharaf Hossain and Pabna municipality mayor Kamrul Hasan Mintu also joined the demonstrators. The demonstrators demolished a part of the illegal occupation today (Monday).
Earlier, Intra Food, a reputed food industry of the district started construction of a pillar in the middle of the Ichhamati River for expanding the factory site.
Claiming the ownership of the land the company started construction pillars occupying the river at a key water releasing point.
Talked with the demonstrators the mayor asked the district administration and the Water Development Board to remove the illegal occupation of the river.
