Illegal use of electricity
Tuesday, 7 October 2008
The power load-shedding has been a perennial problem in Dhaka city as elsewhere of the country. The economy is paying a heavy price due to short-supply of power and the citizens whether they are living in cities or towns or in villages have been subjected immense sufferings. Many industries are producing goods below their capacity because of load-shedding.
But, surprisingly, the agencies concerned are found to be reluctant to take actions against unauthorized users of electricity, even during peak hours. In many parts of the Dhaka city makeshift shops on the roadside and pavements are seen using electric bulbs taking unauthorized connections from overhead power lines. A section of unscrupulous employees of DESA and DESCO are reportedly involved in the malpractice. However, it is hard to believe that such wrongdoing does escape the notice of the high officials of those power entities. If that is the case, should we believe that they, too, are involved in such irregularities?
