FE Report | Sunday, 7 September 2014
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) will hand over 95 motorcycles to the ministry of labour and employment (MoLE) today (Sunday) for the labour inspectors of the country's readymade garment (RMG) sector.
The ILO, under its programme on 'Improving Working Conditions in the RMG Sector Programme (RMGP)' will hand over the motorcycles to the MoLE for the inspectors of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) at CIRDAP auditorium in the capital.
State Minister for the MoLE Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Canadian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Heather Cruden, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Gerben Sjoerd de Jong, British High Commissioner Robert W Gibson and Country Director of ILO country office for Bangladesh Srinivasa B Reddy, among others, are expected to be present in the event.
The hand-over of the motorcycles will mark an important step in the enhancement of DIFE's capacity to effectively carry out labour inspections in Bangladesh.
The RMGP is an initiative of the government of Bangladesh. It is being implemented by ILO and funded by Canada, Kingdom of the Netherlands and the government of the United Kingdom (UK).
The three-and-a-half-year initiative focuses on improving RMG factory building safety, workers' rights and overall working conditions in Bangladesh.
The government upgraded the DIFE from the directorate this year. The DIFE is a department under the MoLE. The responsibility of the DIFE is to ensure welfare, safety and health of valuable human resources working in various sectors contributing to national development.
It has been playing a leading role in creating a safe and healthy work culture and improving the quality of wage earners by enforcing the existing labour laws of the country.
