ILO official in Dhaka

Tuesday, 22 April 2014

The Deputy Director-General of International Labour Organisation (ILO) is in the town ahead of the first anniversary of Rana Plaza building collapse at Savar Upazila which killed more than 1100 people. Gilbert Houngbou arrived in Dhaka city on Tuesday morning to attend the ILO events and those organised by the government on April 24 – the day last year when Bangladesh’s worst ever industrial disaster happened, killing more than 1100 garment workers, mostly female ones, after the collapse of the multi-storey Rana Plaza, which housed five ready-made garment (RMG) factories when it caved in at Savar Bus stand. ILO has supervised a tripartite agreement with the government, factory owners and workers bodies to ensure factory safety and worker’s rights after the nine-storey commercial complex collapse provoked a global outcry. The ILO is implementing a three-and-half year programme to support the national tripartite action plan, according to bdnews24.com.
