Imams urged to keep vigil against who uses Islam

Thursday, 21 January 2010

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has called upon the Imams and religious leaders to remain vigilant so that the vested interest groups could not mislead the people by using Islam.
"You have to unmask them before the people by raising public awareness through correct interpretation of Islam, the religion of peace," the PM said.
The PM said this while addressing the National Conference-2010 of Trained Imams jointly organised by Ministry of Religious Affairs, Islamic Foundation and UNICEF in the city Wednesday, reports BSS.
The PM also sought cooperation of the Imams and religious leaders so that none could spread terrorism, militancy and communalism in the country in the name of Islam.
"Islam is a religion of peace and tranquillity and there is no room for militancy and terrorism in it," Sheikh Hasina added.
Referring to a number of demands, the PM said her government would take effective measurers to appoint a religious teacher in each primary school across the country saying complete education could not be achieved in absence of religious education.
"We have also taken steps in our new education policy to provide religious education to each of the children aimed at heightening their religious faith and values," the PM said.
In this context, PM Sheikh Hasina announced her government's plan to raise honorarium of the Imams and creating employment opportunities for those who are educated from madrasahs and taught in religious education.
Besides, the PM said her government would take appropriate steps to expand the activities of Islamic Foundation up to upazila levels to this end.
