Impending floods amid corona crisis

Tuesday, 30 June 2020

The coronavirus has taken an alarming turn in Bangladesh and cyclone Amphan also caused huge losses in the southern region recently. Now the report of floods in about 20 districts is going to be anotherserious concern. Meteorologists have also predicted flooding in July, late August and early September.
The first phase of flood may affect districts such as Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Sirajganj, Bogra, Pabna, and Tangail. As more than 200 rivers are likely to swell in next one month, more areas may see flooding this year.
Given the livelihood challenges during the pandemic, this year's flood may cause more suffering to public life. So, the government, NGOs, voluntary organisations and the people in general need to be ready to face the situation. Marooned people would need food and other supports and after the flood, restoring livelihoods would be a major challenge.
