Implementation of ILO Convention demanded

FE Report Leaders of different right groups at a press conference Thursday demanded immediate implementation of ILO Convention 189 and the Domestic Worker Protection and Welfare policy- 2010 to protect the rights of domestic workers. The press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity to draw the attention of the government on this issue, was jointly organized by National Domestic Women Workers Union (NDWWU), Partnership of Women in Action (POWA), Mukto Shishu Nari Sromik Forum, Vashoman Nari Sromik Unnoyon Kendra, Dolit Nari Forum and Nagorik Uddyog. The press conference was addressed by Advisor of NDWWU, Mr. Abul Hossain and General Secretary, Murshida Akter, Coordinator of POWA Mirana Begum, President of Mukto Shishu Nari Sromik Forum, Lovely Easmin, Vice President of Vashoman Nari Sromik Unnoyon Kendro, Romena Begum, President of Dolit Nari Forum, Moni Rani Dash, Zakir Hossain, Chief Executive of Nagorik Uddyog. Zakir Hossain has urged the government to implement the said policy for the greater interest of the neglected people of the country. "Domestic workers are doing a lot of household tasks but in our country there is no policy for them yet. Even the physical tortures on them have been increasing day by day", he said. According to the Domestic Worker Protection and Welfare policy- 2010, at present more than 2.0 million people are engaged in this job of whom 80 per cent are female. 'Domestic work is a vast area where lots of people are employed but no legal recognition has been formulated yet', said Lovely Easmin.
