Import of woven labels at high price hits RMG export

Thursday, 22 July 2010

FE Report
The trade body on woven/printed labels and allied products business has decided to seek government steps to solve their problems.
The 8th Annual General Meeting and the election of the Executive Committee for 2010-2012 of Bangladesh Label Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BLMEA) held recently took the decision.
The business worth $ 100 million faces a problem on nomination requirements of foreign buyers.
“The other problem is the import of woven labels at a high price particularly from Hong Kong and Korea,” BLMEA said in a statement.
These two issues are causing business loss to the local companies as they are not nominated by the buyers.
There is enough installed capacity in the country to meet the total demand of the export-oriented RMG industries.
As regards the first issue of nomination business, nothing much can be done as the foreign buyers would like to have their labels from their selected sources. However with regard to discouraging import of woven labels from Hong Kong, Korea, the meeting decided to approach the concerned authorities in the Ministry of Commerce to look into the matter. .
Mr. Shahidul Haq Sikder, First Vice President presided over the meeting in absence of Mr. Mohammed Hussain Sattar, President of the Association. Majority of the members of the association were present in the AGM.
The AGM reviewed the present status of business and problems of the woven label industry. Bangladesh Label Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BLMEA) started its journey in 2002 with only 12 members with the objective to promote and protect the interest of woven and printed label industries.
Since incorporation the Association has become stronger year by year in terms of membership and financial position.
The meeting also discussed the issue of yarn supply by local shops in Nakhalpara of the city. Though these yarn selling shops are dependent on the label industry, they have kept the industry as hostage to their high yarn prices.
The meeting decided to arrange regular yarn supply from Kader Synthetics the country's only composite texturised filament yarn manufacturer and also to establish a yarn godown under the management of the Association where hundreds of shades and colour yarn will be stored for member industries to avail at a reasonable price.
Earlier on the day election of the Executive Committee for 2010-2012 was held. Mr. M. Nasser Rahman the Founder President of the Association has again been elected President uncontested. Other members of the Executive Committee are First VicePresident- Mr. Shahidul Haq Sikder, Vice-President (Finance)- Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, and Executive Committee Members- Mr. Mohammed Hussain Sattar, Mr. Md. Mizanur Rahman Azad, Mr. Md. Moniruzzaman Khan and Mr. Jahangir S. Islam.
