Importance of local pharma industry

Tuesday, 20 May 2025

The local pharmaceutical industry plays a vital role in a densely populated country like ours, generating approximately $3 billion in annual revenue. With nearly 99 per cent of the industry domestically owned, it boasts of a strong local foundation that fosters economic resilience and self-reliance. Pharmaceutical companies actively disseminate information about both new and existing products to doctors and the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA), ensuring safe and effective use of medications across the country.
This sector significantly supports the healthcare system through initiatives such as doctor training, internship opportunities, research and development, and sponsorship of seminars and professional meetings for specialised physicians. These efforts not only contribute to the continuous education of medical professionals but also promote collaboration and knowledge sharing across the healthcare sector. In many cases, pharmaceutical companies also provide essential medical instruments-such as stethoscopes, surgical kits, and blood pressure monitors-to healthcare practitioners, improving their diagnostic and treatment capabilities, especially in underserved areas.
The pharmaceutical sector is continually enhancing its research capabilities and adopting cutting-edge technologies-such as biotech advancements and digital health tools-to stay competitive on a global scale and meet the evolving needs of patients and healthcare providers alike.
