Important persons in public discussions

Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury | Saturday, 16 August 2014

These days, several key persons figure in debates and discussions for their comments or acts which are simply unworthy of their position. Some people do it out of sheer indifference, ignorance or even in a fit of anger. A minister has described a section of media people as "Khobish" (scum) and this has raised a hue and cry in several circles. The minister in question had raised a serious controversy earlier by smoking in a public function for which he later apologised. In this case, too, he has expressed his regrets and explained his position while many remain unconvinced. Hopefully, he does not create any fuss by any comment or action in the future. The person is otherwise known to be a nice one and a valiant freedom fighter. Why should he commit something that belittle him and his government? Or, he falls into the prey of the interested quarters by whipping up unnecessary debates?
At times, responsible politicians come down on the media too harshly although none should claim that the media as a whole is above controversy. Even worse is when some persons in authority resort to physical violence or use the state-machinery in personal matters in blatant show of power. Quite a few cases in this regard are only the tip of the iceberg.
Definitely, all these are not acceptable in a democratic and decent society. But what is more offensive and amounts to crime is the corruption by the high-ups. Recent reports said a number of persons including several important ones have taken benefits by obtaining fake freedom fighter certificates. The minister of liberation war affairs must be complimented for taking bold actions on the matter by identifying the offenders while many others are still left to be figured out. But it is rather unbelievable that the top official in the ministry dealing with the issue himself is a fake freedom fighter. Nevertheless, for some strange reasons he is still in job!
Some reports said that persons in authority have played tricks with allocation of the RAJUK lands as many lucky ones got them violating the rule on account of sheer favouritism, nepotism and corruption. How many of them have been identified and taken to task? Understandably, many have gone scot-free because of their links.
When people of different professions are moving from post to pillar for securing a much sought-after RAJUK plot for residential purpose, how could ministers and other high-ups got more than one plot! Political and other considerations play a big role in the wrong-doings and in the process people lose confidence in the laws and system.
Several incidents also point fingers to double standards in application of laws and rules. It is painful to watch that at times laws are meant only for the weak and those who care for the laws. However, one case has been quite impressive in recent days when it was reported that the launch belonging to either himself or close relatives of the shipping minister has been fined for non-compliance of necessary rules. If true, this is something to be commended and the minister may also deserve appreciation even though he otherwise lands in controversy. It is important that those who frame laws and talk high about rules must themselves abide by those strictly than others so that faith in the system is maintained.
It is disconcerting to watch alarming decline in moral values in society. It is imperative that values must be upheld as far as possible by actions against the current trend. Corruption and unethical acts must be hemmed in so effectively that the ills of society are discouraged if not eliminated. After all, society must get rid of the immoral and corrupt methods in the interest of true democracy and finer values.
