CHITTAGONG, Dec 19: A Chittagong importer has alleged that an Iranian exporter has dumped sand and chalk powder instead of soda ash in containers in collusion with the pre-shipment inspection (PSI) company concerned.
The concerned importer, the QMM Trading Corporation accused the PSI company of deceiving it (importer) through submitting a false report in collaboration with the Iranian exporter.
The QMM Trading Corporation struck an agreement with an Iranian organisation for importing soda ash worth taka 35 million (3.5 crore) and necessary LC was opened at the beginning of this year.
Later, a consignment of 1046 Metric tonnes of goods in containers arrived at Chittagong Port and in the middle of November. The 48 containers were cleared after necessary formalities. As per PSI report, the imported containers were stated to be containing soda ash. But, after clearing the goods when confusion arose about the genuineness of the imported goods, the PSI company was informed immediately.
The Managing Partner of QMM Trading, Mazharul Hoque told the FE that the PSI Company advised them to depute independent surveyor to draw sample of content for getting the same tested by competent laboratories which the importer has done with the BCSIR accordingly.
The test report showed that it was not soda ash rather a mixture of chalk powder, sand and other materials.
