Importers to open shops for selling goods at fair price

CHITTAGONG, Aug 18: In a bid to reducing the huge gap between import price and retail price of essential commodities, the importers themselves are now set to open shops in Chittagong for selling consumer goods at a fair price.

Moreover, to bypass middlemen and keep the price level under control, the procedure of transacting the Delivery Order (DO) through pay order also begins shortly in Chittagong as was done in the past.

This was decided in a meeting between importers and the joint forces yesterday. It was also resolved in the meeting to launch fair price sales centres at 34 points of the district including the port city with effect from today.

Sources said, with the introduction of fair price shops the rise in price in the markets would be curbed significantly. With a view to keep the price of essential items including rice, pulse, chhola, edible oil, onion, etc., under control and within the buying capacity of consumers in the coming month of Ramadan, representatives of the joint forces took part in discussions with the importers.
