Saturday, 8 October 2011

RAJSHAHI, Oct 7 (BSS): Large-scale expansion of livestock farming is very vital to remove the existing protein deficiency together with freeing the country's northwest region from the curse of poverty and hunger, said experts and dairy farmers. Associate Prof Jalal Uddin of Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science of Rajshahi University said the region has an enormous prospect of expanding the livestock sector through best use of its existing natural resources. In addition to meet the nutritional deficit especially meat and milk, the livestock rearing is very helpful for increasing soil nutrient, which has declined gradually due to indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and harmful pesticides, he said. There is no alternative to expansion of dairy farming to maintain a sound environment along with protecting the biodiversity from further degradation, he added.
