Impunity culture behind growing graft: TIB

Tuesday, 11 March 2014

The all-pervasive graft in the country is unlikely to be eliminated from society if the culture of impunity does not go, said executive director of the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Dr Iftekharuzzaman on Tuesday. The corrupt people cannot be brought to justice due to the culture of impunity. The more there’ll be the practice of impunity, the greater there’ll be the corruption in the country,” he told a discussion in the capital. Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba), an environmental voluntary organisation, arranged the discussion, titled ‘Corrupt promoting policies and environmental havoc’ at the Jatiya Press Club in the morning. Identifying the reasons behind the growing corruption, Iftekharuzzaman said it is very difficult to put the corrupt people on trial since those in enforcement agencies are violating rules more than others, according to UNB.
