Impunity to doctors at the cost of patients
Friday, 18 April 2014
It is indeed sad that the doctors at BIRDEM hospital stopped their works in protest against an alleged assault on a doctor and vandalism in the hospital by relatives of a patient who died there. The relative of the patient committed wrong but the doctors could have expressed their protest in a different way which would not hamper their services to the patients.
In our country, doctors go scot-free even after making gross mistakes in treatment. Many patients seriously suffer or die due to their wrong treatment but no action is taken against the guilty physicians. The tradition of impunity must not exist and the guilty doctors must be held accountable for their actions. One mistake done by any doctor can cost someone's life. Medical profession is a noble profession and not like any other trade or business. So, those joining this noble profession must have noble mentality to serve humanity in distress. Transparency and accountability must be ensured in our healthcare sector so that more and more people get benefit from it.
